I want to download a book from Ebook Central for offline reading.  How does that work?

In December 2025, Ebook Central will change from using Adobe Digital Editions to a custom Ebook Central App for offline reading / ebook "checkouts."

The new Ebook Central App relies on EPUB format.    Built for both mobile and desktop, it brings a consistent, user-focused experience for reading downloaded Ebook Central titles and is available for Mac, Windows iOS, and Android operating systems.

To install the Ebook Central App

  1. Connect directly to the Ebook Central database or follow a link for a specific title from OneSearch.
  2. When viewing a book available for download / checkout, click the download button or link.

  3. You will be prompted to sign in to your Ebook Central account, if you have not already done so.  To sign in, you are taken through our OpenAthens service.
  4. You will be asked to choose the loan length (usually 1, 7, or up to 21 days, depending on the publisher).
